SIL and Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is funding for help with daily tasks at home so you can live as independently as possible. This guide explains how SIL works, what a roster of care is, and when 24/7 person-to-person support applies.

What is SIL?

SIL is support given in your home to help with things like personal care, cooking, cleaning and managing your routine. It is for people who need a significant amount of help to live in their own home (alone or with others). SIL funding is paid to your chosen Provider, who then arranges staff to support you according to an agreed plan—your “roster of care”.

Roster of Care

A roster of care is a document that describes how much support you need, when you need it, and what type of support (e.g. one-to-one, shared, active overnight). It is used to work out your SIL funding and to guide your Provider on how to roster staff so you get the right support at the right times.

What’s in a roster of care

  • How many hours of support you need each day (e.g. morning, evening, overnight)
  • Whether support is one-to-one (just for you) or shared with other residents
  • Whether you need “active” overnight support (someone awake and supporting you) or “passive” (someone present but not actively providing care unless needed)
  • Any specific tasks or routines (e.g. medication, mobility, communication)

24/7 Person-to-Person Support

Some Participants need support at all times—day and night. “24/7 person-to-person support” means there is always a worker present and available to support you when you need it. This might mean one worker overnight (active or passive) and one or more during the day, depending on your roster of care. The NDIA approves this level when it is reasonable and necessary for your situation.

Your roster of care will spell out how many staff hours are funded and in what pattern (e.g. 2:1 in the morning, 1:1 in the evening, active overnight).

What You Need for SIL

  • An NDIS plan that includes SIL funding (based on your assessed needs and roster of care)
  • A place to live (you may have SDA, or rent privately, or live in another type of housing)
  • A SIL Provider you choose to deliver your in-home support
  • Agreement on how the roster will work (who, when, what tasks)

Finding a SIL Vacancy

If you are looking for a share house or vacancy that offers SIL, you can search for Providers and properties in your area. Some Providers list vacancies on their websites or through LACs and support coordinators. FWBS can help you understand SIL and point you to options—get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my SIL Provider?

Yes. You can change Providers by giving notice as set out in your service agreement. Your SIL funding stays in your plan; it moves with you to the new Provider. Give yourself time to arrange the handover so your support continues smoothly.

Does SIL pay for my rent or the building?

No. SIL pays for the support workers and the support delivery. Rent, board or the cost of the building (e.g. SDA) are separate. You may pay rent from your own income or with other housing assistance.

What if my needs change?

If your support needs change significantly, you can ask for a plan review. The NDIA may update your SIL funding and roster of care. Your Provider can help document changes and support you through the process.
